OGQ is pleased to announce that it will be supporting young 17 year
old boxer Shiva Thapa as part of its Vision 2016 program. Shiva, who
won a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games at Singapore and also at
the World Youth Boxing Championship, took up the sport of Boxing at
the tender age of 7 and was initially coached by his father, Mr. Padam
Thapa. His splendid boxing skills have fetched him ten gold, one
silver and three bronze medals from 16 national and international
tournaments that he has participated in, an outstanding record indeed.
COO of OGQ Viren Rasquinha sounded very optimistic, "Shiva is an
enormous talent. He must be groomed well because he has the talent,
the right attitude and the hunger to succeed. OGQ has very high hopes
from Shiva and I am confident that he will become one of India's
top boxing stars in the near future."
He only proved us right when he defeated World No.2 and World Amateur
Boxing Champion Delakliev Detelin of Bulgaria to win Gold at the
Belgrade Winner Tournament. Thapa, who won a silver medal at the
National Games earlier this year, won the gold in 56Kg Bantamweight
category.
But there is much more to add to the case of the teenage boxing star
from Assam. From his haul of 14 medals, four had been achieved in
foreign soils while representing India. Shiva currently fights in the
54 Kgs weight category.
Shiva won a gold medal in the 50 kg category representing India at
Hyder Aliyev International Boxing Championship held in Azerbaijan,
Baku (May 2008). He also won two bronze medals at The IV International
Sports Games "Children of Asia" held in Yakutia in 50 kg category
(July 2008) and AIBA World Junior Boxing Championship held in Yerevan,
Armenia in 52 kg category (May 2009). But, his biggest win came
earlier this year when he won the silver at the World Youth Boxing
Championship at Baku and in the process qualified for the inaugural
Youth Olympic Games which is currently underway in Singapore.
Shiva Thapa believes he was born to be a boxer and with a world
ranking of 22 at such a young age, we have every reason to believe
that he is right. |
