Sarjubala Devi

Manipur, India

DOB – 01 June 1993

Event – Light Welter-weight (48kg)

Sarjubala Devi is the latest sensation in the boxing circuit in India. She won silver medal in World Championships in S. Korea in 2014. Before that she had won four Golds in international boxing, including one at 2011 Youth World Women Boxing Championship in Turkey. Add to that the eight Golds she has won at the national level and the seven she has bagged at the state level and it is easy to see why Sarjubala was adjudged India’s best youth boxer two years in a row – in 2010 and 2011.

Sarjubala took up the sport when she was only four. Since then, her resolve has become stronger with each tourney she has played. Sarjubala, who hails from Manipur, is a natural born pugilist. “My life is meant for boxing. I cannot do anything else,” she says. Her breakthrough victory came at the 2011 World Youth Boxing Championships in Turkey, where she beat Russia’s Svetlana Dmitrieva 37-21in the final of the light-welter weight division. She then showed her grit and determination at the 2011 National Boxing Championships in Patiala, where she won the Gold medal with a come-from-behind win in the final round against Krishna Thapa.

Sarjubala draws inspiration from 5 time World Champion Mary Kom. When asked if she wants to become a Mary Kom one day, Sarjubala quips: “Respect is the first word that comes to my mind when I talk about her. No one can ever take her place. But I will certainly do my best to get near her levels of perfection.”

OGQ believes Sarjubala has the potential to become an Olympic champion and we wish her success for the challenges ahead.
